the road train Paknam Luan Suang: Found a very nice place to crash out right next to the beach, it was more expensive than we would normally pay (500BHT/ 10€) but seeing as we slept for free last night we decided to treat ourselves. We arrived midday and I went straight to sleep for a couple of hours to try to make up for the lack of sleep the night before. When I awoke I took a stroll down to the shore and took in the wonderful sight of looking out onto the Gulf of Thailand with the long-tail boats out at sea, palm drenched white sand beach and a few Buddhist Monks walking the shore line towards me.

We the went out for a cycle towards the main village area in the evening and came across a bizarre concrete military ship structure where you could climb up onto deck and look out to sea. Every 20 minutes or so someone would let off a whole load of fire crackers just outside as if in commemoration or something similar, we are not sure. We sat down and had ice cream while watching the local youth play Sepak takraw, they have some very cool moves in that game and I would like to try and play it once but preferably on some very soft floor matting.

After a very good nights sleep we awoke early and set off to go to Tha Chana. We started well enough and had plenty of food and drink, which is the culprit of my fall from my bike. We were nearly at Lamae about 3km outside when I was trying to put back my can of Pepsi into my holder when I lost control and went down. As I fell my handlebars twisted and my left bar end caught my left ribs and I fell onto my right. I sat there for what felt like an age trying to catch my breath and then remember Richard running over and telling me not to move. I thought that it might be best that I should as at that moment I was spread out right in the middle of the road so with the assistance of a friendly Thai moped man and Richard we removed my bike and me from danger.

bruised knee Richard was the doing his EFR training to the 'T' checking that I was o.k. which I of course was. I treated a cut elbow and got back on the bike and cycled into the village. We found a lovely little eatery where we had delicious soup and an old lady rubbed in some ointment onto my now very colourful bruised knee. We cycled on to Tha Chana finally finding a good room where I could take stock of the damage.

ribs of steel My mums 'arnica' cream came out and I think I used about half the tube in just one treatment. I was finding new bruises all the time, I really can't remember falling off a bike hurting this bad. But then I don't suppose I would have been pulling about 35k of weight behind me when I last fell off a bike.

The next morning my knee was good to go on and so we did, and made it to Surat Thani. I must say that both Richard and I feel that as we go further south we are finding the change in the Thai people very different. When we were in Chumphon people were shouting out and cheering us on where as now we only very occasionally get a 'hello' and the folks down south are much more grumpy, not so many easy smiles here. That is not to say that they are all like this its just not what we got used to up north. The food is still good and the thunder storms are awesome. We will start the last leg of our bike tour tomorrow, hopefully reaching Krabi in a couple of days.

And just as I was about to sign out we have just had a party of white clad Thais driving and walking past making lots of noise with fire crackers and music. Never a quiet minute here.
